Knowing what to expect on the day of your procedure can help you feel more relaxed and prepared. Your hair transplant surgeon in London will guide you through every stage of the treatment.

So the big day of your procedure is finally here. You’ve gone through all the steps to ensure you are optimised fully to receive a successful hair transplant yielding the highest number of hairs.

The day is routine for the clinic, but we understand the day can be nerve-wracking, exciting and highly emotional. We expect a few laughs and even a few tears along the way. We like to make the day as relaxed as possible for you, so we recommend you change into comfortable trousers and a button-up shirt over which a gown will be placed. Throughout the day, expect Dr Mittal to have a few jokes with you, but if his humour is different from your taste, you can always ask him to pass you the remote and watch Netflix or listen to the radio.

The day will begin by reviewing the medical consent form to ensure everything has been noticed before surgery. This allows Dr Mittal to go through the risks and benefits of the procedure again with you. Dr Mittal will go on to discuss the salient points of the hair transplant and then proceed to mark out the area of concern for you as our patient. We like to make sure we take our time to get this part right and urge you to be vocal about the design should you want anything altered, but generally speaking, this is what the consultation process is all about.

Once the area is marked, be that hairline or crown or any diffuse area through the scalp, pictures will be taken. It is essential to have clear before photos as this is what we will compare your result against at your respective review appointments.

Depending on the nature of the chosen procedure, we will either shave the hair, after which you will be placed face down on our surgical bed. Once face down, Dr Mittal begins with an anaesthetic to the back of your head. A few sharp scratches across the back of the head, and this part of the process is done.

If it is an FUE hair transplant that you have been booked in for, then Dr Mittal will begin by harvesting the hair follicles using one of several tools he has, from the simple Ellis machine to the WAW, Trivielini or the Zeus UGraft machine. Expect this process to take 2-4 hours to complete. Duration is based on the number of grafts and the complexity of extracting the grafts. During the extraction part of the FUE procedure, the hair grafts will be separated into different groupings using stereoscopic microscopes.

After the extraction, a bandage will be placed on the back of your head, and you will be cleaned. This is a natural break; if needed, you can go to the bathroom or stretch whilst we prepare for the second part of the process, which is the incisions.

For the rest of the procedure, you will be face up, which is far more comfortable for you as a patient.

The second part of the procedure is completing the incisions. Some more local anaesthetic was put into the recipient site before starting the incisions (the holes for the grafts to sit in). Angles, direction, and density are critical in this process. Dr Mittal can perform the most natural incisions, leading to near-natural outcomes from having a hair transplant surgery in London. This part of the process will take approximately one hour.

Once the incisions have been completed, we will pause for lunch. You have been extremely patient and have genuinely earnt this break. In the morning, you will already have selected what you want for your lunch, and you have between 15-30 minutes at this point to eat, relax make a phone call, subject to your own needs.

Once lunch is completed, we enter the final part of the day, which is the implanting phase of the hair transplant surgery. Dr Mittal will set a strict structure on how he wants his grafts to be placed across the recipient sites to ensure the most natural outcomes. Expect this part of the process to take between 2-3 hours.

Once the grafts have been placed, Dr Mittal will return to spot-check the work completed and, where needed, make more incisions or take more grafts. The day is complete once he is happy. But once the ok is given, you are bandaged and taken back into the consulting room to go through the aftercare.

You’ll have all the instructions beforehand, but Dr Mittal will go through the aftercare part of the process to ensure no confusion about what needs to be done in the coming days.
