How should I sleep

Sleeping after your hair transplant surgery is something patients don't always think about in advance — but it makes a real difference to your recovery. In the first few days following your procedure, we recommend sleeping at approximately a 45 degree angle rather than lying flat. Don't worry — we'll provide everything you need to make this as comfortable as possible before you leave the clinic.

The reason we recommend this position is simple. Keeping your head elevated allows gravity to do what it does best — drawing fluid downward and away from the scalp, which helps to significantly reduce post-operative swelling. Swelling is a completely normal part of the recovery process and nothing to be alarmed about, but managing it well in those first few days makes the experience far more comfortable.

In terms of timing, swelling typically peaks around day three following the procedure. By around day five most patients find it begins to settle noticeably. From that point onwards you can gradually return to sleeping in your normal position, though we'll always give you personalised guidance based on how your recovery is progressing. The first few nights are the most important, so it's worth setting yourself up properly at home before your procedure day — extra pillows, a reclining chair or a wedge pillow all work well.
