When is it safe to fly after a hair transplant?

One of the most common questions we receive in the lead up to a hair transplant procedure is around flying — specifically, how soon after surgery is it safe to travel by air. Our recommendation is a minimum of 5 days post-operatively before boarding a flight.

The reason for this comes down to biology. When we transplant grafts into the scalp, they are transplanted without the blood supply that was previously nourishing them. In their new location, those grafts are essentially waiting for the body to establish a fresh blood supply to keep them alive and healthy. This process is called angiogenesis — the formation of new blood vessels — and it takes approximately 5 days to begin, sometimes longer depending on the individual.

During those first 5 days, the grafts are at their most vulnerable. The changes in cabin pressure experienced during a flight, combined with the dry recirculated air in an aircraft cabin and the physical demands of travelling through a busy airport, can all place unnecessary stress on the scalp at precisely the wrong moment. It is simply not worth the risk when you have invested so much in your procedure.

This is also why no surgeon — regardless of their experience or reputation — can ever honestly guarantee 100% graft uptake. The body controls the angiogenesis process, not the surgeon. Sometimes, despite everything going perfectly in theatre, the body simply does not produce the blood supply needed to nourish every single graft. This is a biological reality, not a surgical failure.

It is particularly worth bearing this in mind for patients receiving larger procedures — 3,500, 4,000 or 5,000 grafts. The more grafts transplanted, the more dependent the outcome is on the body's ability to establish that new blood supply effectively. Some graft loss is a natural part of the process and is factored into every treatment plan — but giving those grafts the very best environment in which to thrive in those critical first days makes a meaningful difference to your final result.

So if you are planning to fly after your procedure, please plan carefully. Wait the full 5 days minimum, stay well hydrated, and follow your aftercare instructions to the letter.
